Chakras, (pronounced shock-rah), are energy centres in our bodies. In ancient India, mystics believed that energy flowed in and around us from the Earth and they called this energy “prana” or “life-force”. When our chakras are balanced, this energy flows freely through our bodies, energizing us and keeping us mentally and physically healthy. When one or more of our chakras are blocked, we can feel anything from mild fatigue to pain. By meditating and focusing on our chakras, we can keep them balanced, thus balancing our lives.

We have seven major chakras and this is what we will be discussing in this article. Each chakra has a coordinating colour, gem/semi-precious stone, element, sense and scent. The latter of the three, (element, sense and scent), are discussed in the article Chakra Meditation.

We will start at the bottom and work our way up to the top because in order to align your chakras properly, you must be grounded, or connected to the Earth.

The first chakra is called the Base or Root, (Sanskrit: Kundalini), and if this chakra is not balanced it is a good chance that we are feeling lethargic and out of sorts. It is located between the base of the spine and the pubic bone and is associated with our skeletal structure. The colour red is favoured for this chakra so gemstones such as Rubies and Garnets can be worn to help balance it.

Our second chakra is where our sexual centre is located and is called the Sacral chakra, (Sanskrit: Svadhisthana). Located behind and below the navel, it is associated with our bodily fluids, desire and sexuality. When this chakra is balanced, we feel more emotional and connected with those around us. Wearing the colour orange or an orange gemstone such as the Mexican, or Fire Opal will aid in balancing this chakra.

Moving to the area between our ribcage and navel we find the third chakra called the Solar Plexus, (Sanskrit: Manipura). When balanced, our digestion and metabolism are are peak performance and we feel powerful and full of energy. Yellow Beryl or Yellow Sapphire are the gemstones of choice for this chakra.

Chakra number four is called the Heart chakra, (Sanskrit: Anahata) and is located at the sternum. It is obvious that this chakra would control love and compassion but because it affects the heart, the circulatory system is included in it’s realm. What may come as a surprise is the colour frequently associated with the heart chakra which is green. Emeralds, Jade and Turquoise are the favoured gemstones.

Our fifth chakra is called the Throat chakra, (Sanskrit: Visuddha). As the name indicates, it is located in the throat area, governs our speech, self-expression and controls our entire airway. Wearing blue gemstones such as Sapphire, Lapis, Blue Diamond or Blue Topaz encourage this chakra’s balance.

Number six is commonly called the Brow or Third Eye chakra, (Sanskrit: Ajna) and is located in the centre of our forehead. It is said that this is where our “Sixth Sense” originates and is associated with intuition, spirituality and our ability to visualize our dreams. The colour Indigo is known to help keep this balanced and Lapis works well for this chakra also.

The seventh and final chakra is known as the Crown, (Sanskrit: Sahasrara). Located at the top of our heads this is where our spiritual being is found. When this chakra is balanced, we feel peaceful and sharp minded. This chakra is also associated with enlightenment as well as connecting with the spiritual realm. Although Violet has been acknowledged as a colour for this chakra, White is the favoured colour and that should be reflected in gemstones worn to encourage balance. White Diamond, White Topaz, Kunzite (a very soft gemstone), White Sapphire and Clear Quartz are good choices for jewelry.
